Every town has its story – and Viljandi, a charming Hanseatic town, has many waiting to be discovered.
Join a guided walking tour in Viljandi, where history comes alive through stories rather than dates. As your local guide, I will take you through picturesque streets filled with fascinating houses, bridges, and monuments, sharing why they were built, how they got their names, and what has disappeared over time.
We begin at Freedom Square – a place where a statue of Lenin never stood. Why? And what is the story behind the strawberries on the ground? From there, we cross the iconic suspension bridge into the castle hills, where legends and local stories unfold. Why is one cellar called Villu’s Cellar? And who is the mysterious boatman on the lake who still longs for his beloved?
We will even take a moment to swing under an old oak tree – just like locals have done for generations.
This guided tour in Viljandi offers a unique way to experience the town’s atmosphere, combining culture, storytelling, and scenic views.

Viljandi is just the right size to explore by bicycle, allowing you to experience both its historic center and its everyday life. During this guided cycling tour, you will see contrasts between different time periods – from Soviet-era apartment buildings to beautifully renovated homes.
Will we find the city’s two nine-story buildings? Maybe even take a ride in one of their elevators?
One of the highlights is Kantreküla – a district where wooden houses from the early 20th century reflect the town’s industrial past. Once a neglected area, it has now been revitalized, with restored homes and a new sense of life. Even the street names – Italia, Belgia, Soome, Poola – each tell their own story.
We continue through Peetrimõisa and Uueveski, areas developed between the 1940s and 1980s, shaped by people moving to the city in search of a better life. Along the way, you will hear engaging local stories, including the tale of the Stööri Steps.
We will also visit Viljandi’s newest areas, such as Järveveere and Tallinn Road.
